Linernotes.com
A design win for :BaseKB
People ask me all the time "What kind of applications can be built with :BaseKB?" Linernotes.com is a great example.
I met George London at a conference last year, just after I'd published the the original :BaseKB, and he'd told me that he'd successfully loaded :BaseKB Lite, which contains objects that exist both in Freebase and DBpedia, into the Systap BigData triple store.
Last summer he told me he'd loaded :BaseKB Pro, which contains all objects in Freebase into the same product and was using this to power Linernotes. In his words, "Freebase is a fantastic resource, but it's also bloated, inconsistent and dirty. BaseKB gives you a clean, lean version of Freebase that just works out of the box. BaseKB saved me over a dozen hours of painstaking data cleaning." and
"LinerNotes is a one-stop shop for information about music and musical culture. It weaves data from BaseKB together with data from all over the web to create clear, comprehensive summaries of every artist and album under sun."
Because :BaseKB is linked to hundreds of different data sets such as Musicbrainz, DBpedia, the U.S. Census, and the New York Times API, rich applications targeting many domains can be built with a fraction of the resources that it took before -- by connecting to resources such as Spotify and Youtube, George was able to build a compelling music site for a fraction of what it cost to create Pandora ($56 million of VC cash) or Spotify ($288 million)
I'm the creator of :BaseKB and the open-source Infovore framework that updates it weekly to track changes in Freebase. If you need a force multiple to succeed at using Linked Data, [contact me](mailto:ontology2@gmail.com] and join the Infovore and :BaseKB mailing list.
